Young love is what they were. Elena changed Damon, showing him what it was like to have someone love him. While Damon showed her how to have fun let lose a bit. She brought out the sweet caring Damon but Damon still hide the huge feelings he didn't want her to find out. Everyone thought they would be together forever. But all went downwards once she found out the Damon was getting abused. She wanted to help Damon out with it, help his anger. But Damon got scared and bailed on the relationship breaking it off.

Really this part is up to you on what happens to her. Though when Damon and Elena knew each other she had a pretty simple life. If you want you can have some bad happen in her life after they left. Just she will not be abused that is Damon's thing. They haven't seen each other in two maybe three years. So have fun
